Pitiful Pair

A week ago we weaned the two foals. Frodo had just turned six months. I like to wait that long because I believe that a mother's nurturing is important in their development.

Ellie May is seven and a half months, which is a little old, but we decided to wait so they could stay together. Susie almost had her weaned anyway.

They went into a corral near the house and Susie and Mellie went out with the Wild Bunch.

They aren't really pitiful. They're actually being spoiled.

 Hey, what'cha got there?

This is only the second time I fed them apples. Frodo didn't take it from my hand. I don't think he knows what it is yet.

Ellie May didn't either. And about right now Frodo nipped my arm, the little brat.

I put the apples in a bowl for them. Then I went to see Sampson.

He loves apples. I was trying to take the same sort of picture with him taking the apple slice from my hand, but I got attacked by goats when they realized what I had.

The slice hit the ground and Teddy Blue got it. By now my fingers were freezing as it was around 12 degrees out, so that ended the photo taking.

I went for a short walk. When I turned around for home and into the wind, it was cold. We're expecting another chinook and temperatures into the 40s by Tuesday. We'll see if there's any snow left to melt by then or if the wind takes it all.

Aw, poor pathetic creatures! At least they have each other for company. I usually wean at 4-5 months, by then mama is quite content to not be feeding. If possible, I put them back together after the mare has dried up so they still get good social herd interaction. I'm happy that Nitro will be back for a while, it'll be good for him.

Those are some weary faces, yet sweeter than pie. They have really grown.

Does Sampson travel a bit? I thought he was returned to his owners some months ago.

That's the thing about photography this time of year.... my fingers don't last very long outside either, even if I wear gloves of any type. It can be so frustrating sometimes!

I do love your pics in this post. :)
