More Calving Adventures

We had two cows left to calve. One looked like it could happen anytime, so we weren't surprised when we went out to feed and found her standing off from the rest of the herd looking vigilant.

And ornery.

I worked my way around.

Sure enough, down in the ditch protected from the wind and hidden, lay the new calf. The cow pawed the ground in warning. Tom called the dogs, which the cows consider the bigger threat. They usually aren't as concerned about humans.

With the dogs gone, the cow settled down, so I got even closer.

What in the heck is that? This calf's first view of a human.

In fact I'm not sure what that is. Mom, where are you? See how his ears (yes, it turned out to be a bull calf) are going in different directions.

 Here I come.

Let's get out of here.

Don't you just love the image of a cow moving off with the little one at her side?

We visited with our little herd for a while. My crusty ol' cowboy always gets a smile on his face when he pets his cows.

The two cows who calved most recently, still feeling very protective, moved their calves down to the corner.

Get back over here. One calf went under the fence where there's a gap over the ditch.

Not knowing how to get back, he started up the fence, while his mom worried.

 Tom went to help.

The cow didn't like this situation one bit.

 But it all worked out.

Nap time after a busy morning.

  2. Sheesh, what's up with babies under the fence today- this morning when I went out to the mare pen to take the girls out to pasture, Rio was in with Chickory and Gussie- not in the foaling pen with mama! The only way he could have got out was to have been lying down next to the panels and rolled or wiggled underneath the panel- I figured he was too big for that, but you know what happens when you assume...
