Still Catching Up

The weather around here has been gradually changing. The temperature actually reached the 50s for a couple of days, but there's also been a cold wind, lots of clouds, and showers, both rain and snow.

These pictures are from last week, when the sun finally came out to warm our poor little calves up.

In fact everyone wanted some sun.

Bitty Buddha and Pretty Penny found a warm spot on the tractor fender.

Some of the snow melted off by afternoon.

Since the light was so nice, I took a walk up the hillside.

The Rock People were out and about.

There was a whole line of them facing the evening sun.

These two made sure they caught the very last of the rays.

The next morning was sunny and warm.

The ankle joints on the spotted cow's calf didn't seem to be getting stronger. We straightened them using pvc pipe cut lengthwise. After lining the pipe with towels for padding, we taped the leg from the hoof to above the knee.

Deb H recommended  making toe extenders to help the calf rock back onto his heels. It sounds like a good idea. Tom called the vet and he suggested the pvc pipe. Since Tom had seen the pipe way used before, and we had a piece we could use, we went with that, for three days.

We let the smaller calf back out. He was still looking a little humped up, but we decided, that since it was drying up, he'd be better off out on the rangeland than in the muddy pen.

This is a recent picture of the two 'stangs. It's like they never left. Read their story here.

Finally, a picture of Susie, the mare we got last fall. Read about her here.
